It’s that time of year again. Maybe it’s your waistline you’re worried about, or maybe it’s the smoking habit you just can’t seem to kick. The new year is upon us! This is a time for new goals and/or resolutions: to eat less, exercise more, work harder, give more, get your financial situation in order, make a long-delayed life change. Whatever the case, the new year is a great time to set new goals. Why? Because New Year’s Resolutions are ways to improve the current version of ourselves. Resolutions are designed to give our goals and aspirations the upper hand.
Here are 3 simple tips to help you keep your resolutions and/or successfully achieve your personal goals this year…
1. MAKE YOURSELF ACCOUNTABLE
It’s easy to say you’re going to do something, but actually having it written down on paper makes it more likely that you’ll follow through. Along the same lines, it can be helpful to share your goals with others, using their encouragement to help you stay on track. Research has shown that making a public commitment to goals enhances success and follow-through, likely due to the accountability. Determining goals and sharing them increases the sense of ownership and importance, and therefore, the drive to work toward their achievement.
2. STAY MOTIVATED
Small successes add up to produce results, which encourage further momentum. It is a known fact that setting goals is a habit of a large percentage of successful people, regardless of their career setting. Getting started is often the hardest part, but once that ball is rolling, the achievement of your small goals serves as the driving force (motivation) towards the larger, overall goal. Motivation is fire from within!
3. BUILD SELF-CONFIDENCE
Everyone likes to feel successful. It’s important in life to not only celebrate the big milestones, but the small victories along the way as well. Setting small, achievable goals forces you to stop along the path to your larger goals and appreciate the hard work you have been putting in. With anything in life, it’s not so much about getting to the end destination, but enjoying the journey along the way. A great tool to incorporate into your daily routine is a ‘to-do’ or task list. Not only does this focus your energy into productivity, but at the end of the day or week, being able to look back at what you’ve accomplished is refreshing and can even kickstart the next list.
Make sure you’re not one of those goal-setters that falls off track after the excitement of the New Year has settled. Follow these 3 simple tips and stay on the right track to successfully achieving your goals.
